Celebrating San Juan on Lanzarote

The 23rd of June is a Christian festival in honour of St John the Babtist. It takes place on the shortest night of the year and it marks the summer solstice. In Northern Europe this is mid summer but here on Lanzarote, it is the start of summer time.

The festival is all about fire. It is the only day of the year that fires are permitted to be lit on the island. 'Bonfire Night'!

Many families and friends will join together to make bonfires and prepare food for a good Bar B Q this evening. There will also be larger scale fires and celebrations taking place throughout the island tonight so that tourists can join in the celebrations too.
